Specially designed by Cape Ann artist and native Julia Garrison
This is so much more than just our latest T-shirt design. Inspired by the dance "Widow's Walk", this is a very special, limited edition print, custom designed by the talented Cape Ann artist Julia Garrison. It all began on a hot, late July afternoon last summer, during our annual residence at the Windhover Center for the Performing Arts in Rockport, MA. On a break from rehearsal and teaching, we stumbled upon the Sarah Elizabeth Shop at the Whistlestop Mall by the Rockport train station, and were immediately stricken with the gorgeous hand-crafted prints and textiles that represented a rich decades-long tradition of original block-printing born of the Folly Cove Designers. In perusing the striking images on placemats, tote bags, T-shirts, and table runners, we couldn't help but notice the strong similarities to "Widow's Walk", Dušan's recent dance that was also inspired by the history and architecture of Cape Ann. We invited Julia to see the outdoor performance that evening, after which we both knew that we had to work together on this project. Many thanks to Julia for her creativity, hard work and support! Meet the Artist ...
Julia Garrison grew up in Lanesville, MA and graduated with a BFA in painting from Mass Art in Boston in 1997. She started block printing on fabric in her 20's and discovered the work of the Folly Cove Designers and the Sarah Elizabeth Shop after a visit to the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester. After connecting with the two designers that ran the historical shop since 1974, Isabel Natti and S. Elizabeth Holloran, she began to implement some of their design methods into her own work. After both women passed away, Julia was asked by members of the Natti family to take over the Sarah Elizabeth Shop and continue the tradition of block printing on Cape Ann. She is honored to be given the permission to print on the beautiful antique Acorn press that was the tool and inspiration for so many artists before her.
